About The Department
Year of Establishment: 1995
Established in 1995, the Department of Geography at Birpara College has been a pioneer in imparting geographical education with a strong emphasis on academic excellence, practical training, and social responsibility. The department offers undergraduate courses that combine theoretical learning with hands-on fieldwork, mapping, and research activities.
Geography as a subject helps students understand the complex interactions between human beings and their environments, empowering them to address real-world issues such as urban planning, disaster management, sustainable development, and environmental conservation.
With a team of experienced faculty and well-equipped laboratories, the department nurtures critical thinking, spatial analysis skills, and a deep appreciation of the world’s physical and human landscapes.
Vision
- In a rapidly changing world, with enormous environmental challenges such as Climate Change and Plastic scourge it becomes imperative to shift orientation of students for more solutions-based knowledge and training. Against this backdrop of a changing society, struggling with complex interconnected challenges, the important objective of the department now is – “What is the Purpose of our Discipline?” and “What is the Vision of the Department to ensure that our students will continue to have relevance in the changing society?”.
- Thus, the fundamental vision before the Department today is to explore how we may need to evolve both in terms of the discipline itself as well as the knowledge and training we are imparting to our students so that we remain aligned to and continue to serve our esteemed institution as well as empower the students with renewed inspiration towards a solution-oriented focus in serving society.
Mission
- The Department has a mission to the Discipline of Geography and to the Student & Local Community to encourage and advance Geographic Scholarship through on-going Field Work and Extension Programmes.
- To UG students, to provide Basic Training & Analytical, Technical and Innovative skills to empower students to adjust in rapidly changing environments and to understand the importance of world problems, cultures, global and regional interdependence and cooperation.
- To provide comprehensive & relevant programmes at Undergraduate Level and to provide appropriate General courses to Core Disciplines.
- To empower young minds to address urgent needs of contemporary and future local / regional communities by enhancing problem- solving and practical aptitudes of present students.
Objectives
- To provide the services, resources and support necessary for each student to confidently pursue his or her main objective or professional while also fostering as environment for the student’s growth and development to become successful.
- To assist students transitioning and provide them with resources to aid in major social/ personal /academic exploration.
- To support college undergraduate students in achieving high levels of retention and advancement toward their degree.
- To provide support to students and develop relationship and networks on campus.
- To give students another point of contact so they may learn about the educational system, the application process, the departmental resources, and campus resources in an organised manner.
Future Plans
- To upgrade the infrastructure and facilities of the department such as books, laboratory and equipment, guest faculty as resource persons and in organizing seminars and conferences.
- To undertake minor research programmes, so that the faculty continue with research activities in tandem with teaching.
- Initiate a process to have a good quality departmental journal with the requisite ISSN No. and work towards being shortlisted in the UGC care list.
- Organize International and National and state level workshops or seminars, webinars etc. and encourage student participation.
- Establish a Climate Science Research cum Data Centre
Upgrade the existing computers and set up a computer laboratory with modern and upgraded RS or GIS facilities

Welcome To Department of Geography
It gives me immense pleasure to extend a warm welcome on behalf of the Department of Geography at Birpara College. Since its inception, our department has been committed to nurturing academic excellence, scientific inquiry, and holistic education in the field of geography.
Currently, our department is supported by a dedicated team of six qualified faculty members who bring both passion and expertise to the teaching-learning environment. We offer undergraduate programmes in both B.A. and B.Sc. streams, ensuring a balanced focus on both theoretical knowledge and applied sciences.
The department is well-equipped with modern infrastructure, including a state-of-the-art laboratory, ICT-enabled classrooms, and a fully functional Remote Sensing & GIS Lab. These facilities enable our students to gain hands-on experience and engage in practical applications of geographic principles and technologies.
As the world becomes increasingly interconnected and spatially aware, the role of geography and geospatial sciences has never been more vital. At Birpara College, Geography is not just a subject — it is a journey of exploration, analysis, and discovery. About The Department
Established in 1981 with a pass course and later expanding to include an honors course in 1994, the Department of Bengali at Siliguri Mahila Mahavidyalaya has been a cornerstone of academic excellence and cultural enrichment in the region. The introduction of the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) in 2018 marked a pivotal moment in the department’s academic journey, aligning its curriculum with contemporary educational standards and ensuring flexibility and diversity in learning. One of the hallmarks of the Department of Bengali is the active and sincere participation of its students.
