About Our College

Birpara College is a grant-in-aid, co-educational, undergraduate degree college located in Birpara town in the district of Alipurduar, West Bengal and affiliated to the University of North Bengal (NBU). The college enjoys UGC recognition under 12B and 2(f) since 1993. In 2016, the college was assessed and accredited by NAAC.
Birpara College was established as a commerce college offering B.Com. (General) with English and Bengali as language subjects in 1986. Following increase in student enrolment and acknowledging their demand, the University of North Bengal (NBU) approved Accountancy (Honours) in 2000. By then, the college was also offering courses in humanities. In 1995, NBU had given the college sanction for starting B.A. (General) courses with the Economics, Sociology and Geography as the elective subjects. The introduction of the humanities resulted in manifold increase in the number of students and since then the college has got approval for seven Honours subjects—namely, Geography (2001), Bengali (2003), Sociology (2005), History and Nepali (both in 2009), English (2017) and Political Science (2020)—and six elective subjects: History (2003), Nepali (2005), Political Science (2009), Education and Hindi (both in 2012), and Physical Education (2017). B.Sc. (Program) course with Computer Science, Mathematics and Physics as the subjects was introduced as a self-financed course in 2017.

History

The college was founded in 1986 to provide higher education to the underprivileged from different linguistic communities living in a border area.

Our Founders

Prof. N. Bose, Higher Education Minister, Sri N. Bhattacharjee, Irrigation and Waterways Minister, Sri B. Roy, State Minister for Tribal Welfare, Government of West Bengal, and Prof. D.B. Dutta, Vice-Chancellor, University of North Bengal, and district administration joined hands with other education-loving people of the area to establish a degree college in Birpara. The Manager of Birpara Tea Garden donated 10 acres of the estate’s land for the institution. The then Head Master of Birpara High School, Abhay Charan Kundu, was selected as the first Working President of Birpara College Organizing Committee by the people of the area on 21st August, 1986. Thus the dream of the people for establishing a degree college at Birpara came to life.

Help from Well-wishers

The Organising Committee collected donations from the Tea Garden Management, local businessmen and common people. Among the organisations and people who extended help for the construction of the college buildings, special mention must be made of the Dooars Branch Indian Tea Association (DBITA), Sri A.P. Roy, son of Sri S.P. Roy, industrialist, Sri Pradip Prashad, brick field owner and other eminent personalities.

The college administration would also like to acknowledge the assistance provided by the University Grants Commission, the State Government through its Border Area Development Programme and the Panchayat Samiti, and financial aid through the Backward Area Development and MPLAD funds.
