About The Department
Established in 1981 with a pass course and later expanding to include an honors course in 1994, the Department of Bengali at Siliguri Mahila Mahavidyalaya has been a cornerstone of academic excellence and cultural enrichment in the region. Over the years, the department has witnessed significant growth and evolution, marked by the adoption of modern pedagogical methods, the nurturing of student talent, and a commitment to holistic development.
The introduction of the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) in 2018 marked a pivotal moment in the department’s academic journey, aligning its curriculum with contemporary educational standards and ensuring flexibility and diversity in learning. One of the hallmarks of the Department of Bengali is the active and sincere participation of its students. Many alumni of the department have pursued higher degrees, including Masters and B.Ed., leveraging their foundation in Bengali studies to embark on successful professional journeys across diverse sectors.

Currently offering 84 seats in the honors course and 300 in the program course, the department accommodates a diverse cohort of students, each contributing to the vibrant tapestry of academic discourse and cultural exchange.
