Message of Principal

Birpara College is situated in the Alipurduar district of West Bengal, and is one of the most strategically located colleges close to the Bhutan border and a few kilometres away from Siliguri’s “chicken neck corridor”. The natural beauty of the place adds to the robust academic atmosphere of the College.

Founded way back in 1986, Birpara College went through many trials and tribulations, and came out with flying colours after having gone through the baptism of fire at the initial stage. Right from its inception, it had a dedicated body of Teachers and Non-Teaching Staff who made every possible effort to bring quality education to the students and in general contribute to the overall improvement of the quality of life of the local inhabitants.

It has a vibrant faculty whose members are highly qualified and many of them are pursuing research in their respective areas of interest, in addition to regular teaching. In fact, teaching and learning constitutes the core academic activity of the College. Notwithstanding, financial and logistical constraints, the college was accredited with “B” grade during its first NAAC assessment in 2016, and was adjudged among the best of five colleges in the locality. Moreover, it is a nodal centre for all examinations of the University of North Bengal (NBU), as well as the nodal centre of the NBU’s Department of Geography. The IGNOU and NSOU have study centres as well as examination centres to cater to the needs and aspirations of Under-Graduate and Post-Graduate Candidates studying in the Open and Distance Learning Mode. To add a feather to its cap, Birpara College recently inaugurated its GIS Laboratory that will greatly facilitate research in physical and social sciences. Many infrastructural and logistical projects are going on in full swing, and many more are in the pipeline, to enable the College to meet and cope with future challenges.

The college has a fairly good student diversity, and is gender sensitive. There are separate facilities for men and women students. Student intake is predominantly from tea garden workers and other under privileged groups. The vision of the college is holistic development of the students and the mission is that of inclusiveness and sustainable growth taking into account all the social and economic parameters.
